Windows 7 becomes the fastest-selling OS ever
Windows 7 has sold more than 240 million copies in its first year, making it the fastest-selling operating system ever, and helping the software giant to record profits in spite of the recent dip in computer sales growth.
Win7, which costs from $80 (upgrade) to $320 (ultimate), was launched a year ago this week to supersede the much harangued Vista.
Although Apple OS X and Linux-based operating systems like Ubuntu have won some market share in the past few years, Windows still control 90% of the world’s 1.4 billion+ PCs, and is expecting more customers to upgrade or switch to Windows7 in the coming months.
PC sales however, rose only 11 per cent in the July-to-September period, according to research firm IDC, compared to 22 per cent in the three months before that.
